How to Get a Telegram Message When Someone Buys on Your Website

By Fox, founder of BrandGoblin AI · Updated October 2, 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: To get a Telegram message when someone buys on your website: create a bot with Telegram's @BotFather, store its token in your hosting settings, then have your site send a message through the bot's API whenever a signup, email or pay button event happens. A daily scheduled job can send a summary too. It's free.

There's a moment every new founder remembers: the first time a stranger buys something. Most of us found out hours later, in an email, or the next day, in a dashboard.

It doesn't have to be that way. With a small Telegram bot, your phone buzzes the second it happens, along with what that person did before they bought. Here's how it works and how to set one up for free.

Why Telegram

  • It's free. Bots cost nothing to create or run.
  • It's simple. Sending a message is one web request to Telegram's Bot API (Telegram Bot API).
  • It's on your phone already. Telegram has over a billion monthly users (Pavel Durov), and messages arrive like any other chat.
  • It's private. Only people you approve see the messages.

The four pieces

1. The bot

Open Telegram, search for @BotFather, send /newbot, pick a name and a username ending in "bot". BotFather gives you a token: a long secret string. Treat it like a password. Paste it into your hosting settings as an environment variable (for example TG_TOKEN), never into your code or a chat.

2. Knowing who to message

A bot can only message someone who has pressed Start on it. The clean way: your site sets a webhook so Telegram tells it when someone presses Start, and your site saves that chat. Approve yourself (and anyone on your team) so strangers who find the bot get nothing.

3. The moments worth a ping

Don't ping on every page view; you'll mute it in a day. Ping on the moments that mean money:

  • Someone leaves their email.
  • Someone creates an account.
  • Someone presses your pay or booking button.
  • Someone pays, upgrades or cancels.

The magic is context. "Someone pressed Pay" is nice. "Someone pressed Pay on the Max plan, third visit this week, came from your newsletter" tells you exactly how to follow up.

4. The morning summary

A scheduled job (Vercel Cron, a Cloudflare cron trigger, or any scheduler) sends one message every morning: yesterday's visitors, top pages, signups, pay presses and who's due a follow-up. It's the habit that makes the data useful.

Why the speed matters

Following up fast is one of the most reliable advantages a small brand has. In a Harvard Business Review study, companies that followed up on web leads within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify them as companies that waited even an hour longer (Harvard Business Review). A ping makes "within an hour" automatic.

It matters for the almost-buyers too. Around 70% of online shopping carts are abandoned (Baymard Institute). If you know who pressed Pay and didn't finish, a short personal note can win some of them back.

Keep it safe

  • Keep the bot token in your hosting settings only.
  • Verify every webhook call with a secret, so nobody else can talk to your bot through your site.
  • Approve people one by one; ignore everyone else who presses Start.
  • Don't send passwords, card numbers or private messages through the bot. Names, pages and actions are plenty.

The shortcut

If you'd rather not wire this up by hand, we packaged ours. The free CRM + Telegram bot kit has Claude build the whole thing into your website: the bot, the approvals, the instant pings with context, the morning summary, plus a private CRM page showing who's on your site right now and everyone who's left an email or pressed Pay. It's what we use to run BrandGoblin.

Give us your best email, confirm it once, and the kit is yours.
